Mechanical Engineer

Join a leading player in the automotive industry on a high-impact contract assignment where your mechanical design and analysis expertise will directly influence next-generation products. You will work within a fast-paced engineering environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, compliant, and innovative mechanical solutions.

About the Role:

In this role, you will take ownership of mechanical design activities from concept through to validation, using advanced CAD and simulation tools to develop high-quality components and assemblies. You will ensure designs meet automotive and aerospace standards while managing project deliverables, timings, and technical risks. Your work will be central to achieving performance, safety, cost, and reliability targets across multiple programmes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of mechanical components and assemblies using CAD tools such as SolidWorks or CATIA
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other simulations to evaluate strength, stiffness, fatigue, and thermal performance of designs
  • Interpret and apply relevant automotive and aerospace standards (e.g., ISO, BS, ASME) to ensure compliance in all design outputs
  • Develop and maintain design documentation, including specifications, BoMs, engineering change notes, and technical reports
  • Plan and manage work packages, including task breakdown, scheduling, risk identification, and progress reporting to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, test, and quality teams to resolve design issues, support build activities, and implement design improvements
  • Use MATLAB or similar engineering software to support calculations, data analysis, and system-level modelling
  • Support design reviews, presenting technical justification, analysis results, and design trade-offs to internal and customer teams

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Engineer in a design-focused role within automotive, aerospace, or closely related engineering sectors
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA) for complex mechanical assemblies
  • Hands-on experience performing FEA and engineering simulations to support design decisions
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, and tolerance analysis
  • Working knowledge of automotive and aerospace standards and their application to real-world design work
  • Demonstrable project management and planning skills, including managing priorities and delivering to tight deadlines
  • Proficiency with MATLAB or equivalent engineering software for analysis and modelling
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working with both metallic and composite materials in high-performance applications
  • Background in designing for high-volume manufacturing or advanced manufacturing processes
  • Exposure to systems engineering or model-based systems engineering (MBSE) environments
  • Familiarity with DFMEA, DFM/DFA, and other structured design quality methodologies
  • Experience interfacing directly with OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers on technical matters

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership is advantageous
  • Additional training or certification in FEA, CAD, or project management (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP) is beneficial
